Choosing an assisted living community is one of the most consequential decisions a family makes, and it usually happens under time pressure, during a stressful season. The good news: a clear process turns an overwhelming landscape into a short, manageable list.

Start with care needs, not buildings

It’s tempting to begin with photos and amenities. Resist that. The right starting point is an honest assessment of your loved one’s daily needs:

• Mobility: Can they move safely with or without assistance?
• Medication: Do they need reminders, or hands-on management?
• Memory: Are there early signs that point toward memory care?
• Social needs: Do they thrive around people, or prefer quiet?

A community that’s beautiful but can’t meet the actual level of care is the wrong community, full stop.

Understand the real cost

Advertised base rates rarely reflect what a family actually pays. Ask every community for a written breakdown of:

1. The base monthly rate and what it includes
2. The care-level assessment and how it changes the price
3. One-time community or move-in fees
4. How and how often rates increase

Visit more than once

A single scheduled tour shows you the community at its best. Visit again unannounced, ideally around a mealtime, to see daily life as it really is.

The brochure is the marketing. The dining room at noon is the truth.
